Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy for Editor & Reviewers

The Journal of AI and Integrative Medicine (JAIIM) recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly being integrated into scholarly publishing workflows. While AI-assisted tools may support certain administrative and language-related tasks, editorial decisions and peer review evaluations must always remain the responsibility of qualified human experts.

Editors and reviewers are entrusted with maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, fairness, and scientific quality of the editorial process. The responsible use of AI must never compromise these fundamental principles.

This policy is aligned with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and international best practices for the responsible use of AI in scholarly publishing.

1. Purpose

The objectives of this policy are to:

  • Protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts.

  • Preserve editorial independence and scientific integrity.

  • Maintain trust in the peer review process.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Editor-in-Chief.

  • Associate Editors.

  • Section Editors.

  • Guest Editors.

  • Editorial Board Members.

  • External Peer Reviewers.

  • Editorial Office Staff involved in manuscript handling.

3. Human Responsibility

Editorial and peer review decisions must always be made by qualified human experts.

Artificial Intelligence tools must not:

  • Accept or reject manuscripts.

  • Determine scientific validity.

  • Assess originality or novelty independently.

  • Evaluate the significance of research findings.

  • Replace scientific judgment.

  • Replace peer reviewers or editors.

Editors and reviewers remain fully responsible for every recommendation, editorial decision, and review report.

4. Acceptable Uses of AI

Editors and reviewers may use AI-assisted tools for limited purposes that do not compromise confidentiality or editorial independence, such as:

  • Grammar and language improvement.

  • Spelling correction.

  • Readability enhancement.

  • Formatting assistance.

  • Reference formatting and verification.

  • Workflow management.

  • Administrative support.

Any AI-assisted output must be carefully reviewed and verified before use.

5. Confidentiality Requirements

Submitted manuscripts are confidential documents.

Editors and reviewers must not upload, copy, paste, or otherwise disclose confidential manuscript content, unpublished data, peer review reports, or author-identifying information to publicly available AI systems or generative AI platforms that may retain, learn from, or reuse submitted content.

Confidentiality obligations remain in effect before, during, and after the peer review process.

6. Verification of AI Output

AI-generated content may contain:

  • Incorrect information.

  • Fabricated references.

  • Biased interpretations.

  • Incomplete analyses.

  • Outdated information.

Editors and reviewers must independently verify all AI-generated outputs before incorporating them into editorial communications or peer review reports.

AI recommendations must never replace expert scientific evaluation.

7. Conflicts of Interest

The use of AI must not create or conceal conflicts of interest.

Editors and reviewers remain responsible for declaring any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest in accordance with the journal's Conflict of Interest Policy.

8. Editorial Independence

AI technologies must not influence or override independent editorial judgment.

Editorial decisions shall be based exclusively on:

  • Scientific quality.

  • Editorial expertise.

Publishers, sponsors, advertisers, institutions, or AI systems must not influence editorial decisions.
