The Journal of Agricultural Technology and Food Systems (JATAFS) is committed to promoting transparency in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies throughout the research and publication process.

Authors, editors, and reviewers who use AI-assisted tools in connection with scholarly work should disclose such use appropriately, ensuring that the integrity, originality, and accountability of scientific research are maintained.

This policy complements the journal's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy and aligns with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and international best practices for responsible AI use in scholarly publishing.

1. Purpose

The objectives of this policy are to:

  • Promote transparency in the use of AI technologies.

  • Ensure accountability for published scientific content.

  • Preserve research integrity.

  • Inform readers about the role of AI in manuscript preparation and editorial workflows.

  • Encourage responsible and ethical use of AI.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Authors.

  • Editors.

  • Peer reviewers.

  • Editorial Office staff.

It covers AI-assisted tools used during manuscript preparation, editorial assessment, peer review, language editing, image generation, and related publication activities.

3. Disclosure by Authors

Authors should disclose the use of AI tools when they have materially assisted in:

  • Language editing.

  • Grammar correction.

  • Translation.

  • Code generation.

  • Data analysis.

  • Image generation or enhancement.

  • Literature organization.

  • Other significant manuscript preparation activities.

The disclosure should briefly describe:

  • The AI tool used.

  • The purpose for which it was used.

  • The extent of its contribution.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all submitted work.

4. Disclosure by Editors and Reviewers

Editors and reviewers who use AI-assisted tools for permitted administrative purposes should ensure that:

  • Confidential manuscript information is protected.

  • AI tools are not used to replace independent scientific judgment.

  • Editorial and peer review decisions remain entirely under human responsibility.

Where required by the journal, editors and reviewers should disclose significant use of AI in editorial workflows.

5. AI Is Not an Author

Artificial Intelligence systems cannot satisfy internationally recognized authorship criteria.

Accordingly:

  • AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors.

  • AI systems cannot assume responsibility for published work.

  • Human authors remain accountable for all content.

6. Editorial Assessment

The Editorial Office may request clarification where AI use has not been adequately disclosed or where concerns arise regarding originality, confidentiality, or research integrity.

Failure to provide accurate disclosure may result in:

  • Requests for revision.

  • Additional editorial review.

  • Rejection of the manuscript.

  • Other actions consistent with the journal's Publication Ethics Policy.

7. Responsibilities

Authors, editors, and reviewers are responsible for:

  • Using AI technologies responsibly.

  • Providing honest and complete disclosures.

  • Protecting confidential information.

  • Verifying AI-generated outputs.

  • Complying with all applicable journal policies.

This policy will be reviewed periodically to reflect developments in AI technologies and evolving international guidance on responsible AI use in scholarly publishing.

Updates may incorporate recommendations issued by COPE, ICMJE, WAME, Crossref, and other recognized organizations.
